Night of the Living Dead ... Niteman Speaks

It's been awhile since I've had a chance to update the blog ... Sorry ... No, contrary to popular belief ... I'm not dead! ... Just dead tired! ... My current job keeps me quite busy these days.

Well, enough about that. Many of the fans of this blog have a strong interest in zombies. So I thought that with the release of the Bill Hinzman Cemetery Zombie collectible (check below) that I would take a moment and give you a "taste" ... no not brains ... of an all time classic, Night of the Living Dead.

If you have not yet seen this 1968 classic zombie flick, you can watch the full movie below via YouTube. I know ... the quality sucks but at least you get it free. This movie was pretty graphic for 1968 and has a uncanny sense of realism.

For all you Xbox fans out there, do check out the game Dead Rising ... if you haven't already. Take a trip to the mall and kill all the zombies that you want with just about anything you can pick up.

Niteman Speaks ... About Dark Shadows

If you had not been born yet in 1966, you may have never heard of Dark Shadows. I am lucky enough to have been around long enough to enjoy this Gothic soap opera when it was first run on ABC from 1966 to 1971. Every afternoon, if possible, I was in front of the TV set to watch this favorite of mine.

The show had many supernatural elements which were very daring for a daytime soap of the time. Not only was the subject of vampirism pretty much the main theme, but you also got stories of werewolves, ghosts, zombies, witches and warlocks, man-made monsters and even time travel.

The show had a large following at the time, and even to this day, the show remains a cult classic and still has quite a number of fans.

If you have yet to be introduced to this awesome piece of TV "horror" history, borrow it from a friend or relative, or better yet, start your own DVD collection.

Enjoy the info below ... until next time!

Dark Shadows on DVD

Dark Shadows DVD Collection I - 1966
[Black & White, Full Screen]

Starring:
Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins
Grayson Hall as Dr. Julia Hoffman
Nancy Barrett as Carolyn Stoddard
Joan Bennett as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard
Alexandra Isles as Victoria Winters
Louis Edmonds as Roger Collins
Kathyrn Leigh Scott as Maggie Evans

Creator: Dan Curtis

"The story of Dark Shadows begins with newly hired governess Victoria Winters arriving at Collinwood, the Collins' estate in Collinsport, Maine in search of her mysterious origins. She soon is caught up in the strange events and mysteries that seem to surround the Collins family. Eventually, the Collins' "cousin from England", Barnabas Collins, arrives and takes the show in a new direction; his vampire curse introduces a new history of the Collins family. Part of this revised history is the popular character of the witch Angelique whose jealously led to the tragic death of Barnabas' great love Josette and who placed the curse upon Barnabas."

Barnabas Collins - A Rare Collector's Figure

In 2006, Majestic Studios, a Hong Kong based manufacturer of action figures and collectibles, released a 12 inch, 1900's version of Barnabas Collins of Dark Shadows fame. I was lucky enough to add this one to my own collection, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

The action figure comes with 3 different interchangeable heads: Normal, Vampire and Old Man and two pair of interchangeable arms. His trademark ring is included on the right hand of one of the included arms. Barnabas is dressed in his signature style outfit with walking cane accessory, complete with wolf's head. A display stand with the Dark Shadows insignia is included; however, he will stand on his own.

This rare, hard-to-find collector's figure is currently available through Amok Time, one of the many sellers at Amazon.com.
At the time of this post, there were only 5 left in stock ... so if you want one, don't wait too long.

A Classic B-Movie

One of my all time favorite horror movies is The Tingler. If you are a fan of 50's B-Horror and you have yet to discover this classic, then now is the time to view a print of this William Castle film.

Why is it so great? Well, first of all it has Vincent Price as Dr. Warren Chapin, a kind of "mad scientist" of sorts, who discovers that in cases of extreme fear a person can experience a tingling of the spine. This is due to the growth of a spinal parasite, or "Tingler", which could kill the host unless destroyed by screaming.

Secondly, when the original movie was released in 1959, William Castle, the director, invented a gimmick called 'Percepto' to give his audiences an extra thrill. Electrical vibrators were attached to the underside of selected seats in the movie theater. At the climax of the film, the "Tingler" supposedly escapes into the auditorium. All the lights were turned out and the projectionist would activate these vibrators which would then provide a "tingle" to some unsuspecting patrons in the audience. The audience was then enticed to scream for their lives. According to all reports, this proved to be very effective, and audiences really loved it.

The movie was filmed in black and white; however, there is one scene, the bloody bathtub scene, were red blood is flowing from the faucet in the sink. Also a bloody hand rises from a bathtub filled with bright red blood.

Please enjoy the clips and information below.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Tingler - 1959

Vincent Price as Dr. Warren Chapin
Judith Evelyn as Mrs. Martha Ryerson Higgins
Darryl Hickman as David Morris
Philip Coolidge as Oliver 'Ollie' Higgins
Patricia Cutts as Isabel Stevens Chapin
Pamela Lincoln as Lucy Stevens

The Tingler Prop Replica

The Tingler prop is a life-size 1:1 scale replica [approximately 22 inches long] which comes specially painted and fully assembled. This is a quality collectible and a must have for "Tingler" fans.

Interested collector's should act fast as the production run of this item was a limited edition of only 200. It is becoming a rarity and almost impossible to find.

Toy Fair 2008 - Last Day ... Niteman Speaks

Well, it's the last day at Toy Fair 2008. Today Sideshow announces their newest license - 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army.' To celebrate they will be releasing a new metal prop replica of The Samaritan, which is Hellboy's famous pistol. Sideshow's exclusive edition of this piece will feature a set of four clear-tipped tracer rounds, featuring green, battery powered LED lights.

Also on today's list for pre-order release is The Iron Man Life-Size [1:1 Scale] Bust. The bust is cast in high-quality fiberglass, taken directly from the molds used to create the film costume, hand-finished and hand-painted, and features LED glowing eyes.

Let's take a look at both:

For those of you who missed reading the blog yesterday, the 12 inch Indiana Jones Exclusive Edition figure was completely sold out in record time. However if you are a fan of Harrison Ford & Raiders of the Lost Ark, you may be interested to know that you can still pre-order the regular version of Indy from Sideshow's Web site. You still basically get all the goodies but not the torch or dart accessories. This figure will be one of the first figures to feature the new Sideshow 12 inch figure body.
